The standard we work to

WCAG 2.1 at level AA, for both the app and this website. For touch targets the app adopts the stricter 44 by 44 pixel size as its own internal bar.

In the app

Verified against the accessibility tree that TalkBack and VoiceOver read from:

• Every interactive control announces a name and a role: navigation tabs, the save toggle on each card, filter chips, the radius slider, and the audio player's play and pause.
• Controls nested inside a tappable card are reachable on their own, so a screen reader user can save a place without opening it.
• The radius slider exposes its value and can be adjusted with the standard swipe gesture.
• Navigation tabs and the save button meet the 44 pixel target size.
• Text and background pairs in both light and dark themes meet the AA contrast ratio; three token colours were changed to get there.
• Layouts hold at 200% text scaling on the densest screens: place cards, eatery cards and the filter bar.
• Every narrated trail chapter ships with a transcript.

Known gaps

• Filter chips are about 34 pixels tall, under our 44 pixel bar but above the WCAG minimum. Making every chip larger is a visible redesign and has been deferred.
• Map pins are native Mapbox annotations and are not part of the accessibility tree. The list view shows the same places and is the fully accessible alternative.
• A live walkthrough with TalkBack and VoiceOver turned on, on real devices, has not yet been done. Automated checks cover what is announced; only a live run catches focus order and gesture conflicts.
• Narration is a draft synthetic voice. Real narrators, and te reo Māori pronunciation from speakers, are still to be recorded.

On this website

• A skip link to the main content is the first focusable element on every page.
• All navigation works with a keyboard, and focus is visible.
• Images carry alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
• The then-and-now slider can be moved with the arrow keys as well as by dragging.
• Text uses relative sizes and reflows to 400% zoom without horizontal scrolling.

The website has not had an independent audit. This list is what we built for, and nothing more.
