Who we are

HeriTrail is made by Think and Form Limited, an Auckland software studio. References to “we” and “us” mean Think and Form. The service is free to use, has no advertising, and does not sell your data.

Using HeriTrail

• You may use the website and app for personal, non-commercial exploration of heritage places.
• You are responsible for your own safety when visiting a place. Heritage sites can be on private land, unstable ground or near water. Follow signage, respect closures, and follow the tikanga that mana whenua ask of visitors.
• Where a place is marked wāhi tapu or carries visitor guidance, that guidance is part of using the service. Do not use HeriTrail to locate, disturb or remove anything from a site.
• Do not attempt to access data the app does not show you, scrape the service, or interfere with how it runs.

What we can and cannot promise

We work hard to get records right and we show the source of every one, but heritage information is compiled from many hands over many years and some of it will be wrong. Opening hours, access and entry fees change. Coordinates can be imprecise. We provide the service as it is, without a warranty that any record is accurate, complete or current, and we are not liable for loss arising from reliance on it, to the extent the law allows us to say so. If you find an error, please tell us.

Content and licences

Place records, descriptions and photographs on HeriTrail come from open sources under their own licences, listed on the sources and image credits pages. Reuse of that material is governed by those licences, not by us. Trail scripts, narration and the design of the app and website are ours unless stated otherwise, and may not be reproduced commercially without permission.

Content supplied by mana whenua remains theirs. It is published under the terms they set, and may be withdrawn by them at any time. See the cultural policy.

Things you send us

If you send a report, a correction, a story suggestion or a photograph, you confirm that you have the right to share it and you give us permission to use it to improve the service. We will credit photographs you contribute in the way you ask. If material you send concerns Māori heritage, we will not publish it without the agreement of the relevant mana whenua.

Accounts

You need an account to sync saves, build day plans and use some features. Keep your sign-in secure. You can delete your account from the app at any time; what happens to your data is set out in the privacy policy. We may suspend an account that is being used to abuse the service or other people.

Changes and law

We may update these terms and will note the date at the top when we do. These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Questions to admin@thinkandform.co.nz.
