Help get the record right.
HeriTrail is early, small, and built by a handful of people. The fastest way to improve it is to tell us what is wrong, what is missing, and who should be deciding.

There is no submission form yet. Every route on this page is an email to admin@thinkandform.co.nz, read by the person building the app. In the app itself, every place has “Report an issue” and “Suggest a story” controls that reach the same inbox.
Submit a photograph
We can only use a photograph we have the right to use, so a submission needs three things:
- The image, at the best resolution you have.
- Which place it shows, and roughly where you stood. For an old photograph, the year if you know it.
- Who made it, and a licence you are happy with. CC BY 4.0 is the simplest: you are credited by name wherever the image appears, and others may reuse it with the same credit.
Photographs of Māori heritage places are held back until mana whenua have reviewed the place, like everything else about it.
Correct a record
If a name, date, location, category or description is wrong, say which place, what is wrong, and what it should be. A source helps but is not required; we will check. Corrections are applied to the live catalogue, so the site and the app both change.
For iwi and hapū
If your rohe includes places on HeriTrail, we would rather hear from you before anything else happens than after. The cultural policy sets out what is held back by default and what the app will never generate. Māori heritage places are hidden until mana whenua decide otherwise. Content about them is published only as you provide it, under the attribution and conditions you set, and can be withdrawn at any time.
We want to know who we should be talking to, and whether you would like particular places shown, approximated, or left off entirely.
For museums, archives and collections
The then-and-now feature needs dated historical photographs pinned to the spot the photographer stood. Most of the images we want are in collections rather than on Commons. If your collection holds photographs of places in Tāmaki Makaurau or Waikato and you are open to licensing them for a free app, with full attribution and a link back to the catalogue record, we would like to talk.
- We show the licence and credit beside every image, and link to your record.
- We can work with CC licences, a bespoke agreement, or a watermarked preview that drives visitors to your collection.
- Nothing is published until you have approved the caption and credit.
Test the app
The app is in closed testing on Android and iOS. If you would like to walk a trail and tell us what breaks, email with the phone you use and we will send an invitation when the next build is ready.
